GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKINGS

The use of graduated compression stockings has gained wider acceptance in the past few years, especially in view of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) associated with long distance flying. However, the benefits of graduated compression hosiery are available to many more people than just travelers and during pregnancy. Wearing graduated compression stockings can alleviate a range of symptoms associated with venous disorders, and they are also an important aspect of sclerotherapy treatment.

StockingsGraduated compression stockings apply external pressure to the leg and are designed to give greatest support at the ankle, gradually decreasing up to the thigh. This compression design assists the blood flow to return 'uphill' to the heart. Wearing the stockings after sclerotherapy treatment encourages the closure of affected veins, achieving the best results possible from treatment. Graduated compression stockings give far better support than bandages, which have been used in the past, and recent improvements in the design of the hosiery means that graduated compression stockings can be worn comfortably every day.

The range of graduated compression stockings available at VenusCentre Vein Clinic are from Venosan, a notable leader in stocking designs for general support at work, pregnancy support and firmer support for both varicose and spider vein treatment. These stockings are also used to prevent blood clots on long haul flights. With a variety of compression classes in the range available from VenusCentre, we will ensure that both the fit and purpose for your stockings is accurate.

Thankfully, compression stocking design has come a long way! Gone are those awful thick and hot stockings that were nearly impossible to put on – we offer a good range of colours with the most popular style of compression stocking being a thigh high stay up with low allergy “dot tops” – so no restrictive “pantyhose waistbands” or abdominal discomfort.

Class 1 compression stockings are excellent for tired, heavy, aching legs, varicosities without significant oedema, and for varicose veins during pregnancy.

Class 2 compression stockings are used to relieve more severe discomfort, with pronounced varicose veins with oedema, for healing of ulcers, for superficial thrombophlebitis, after sclerotherapy treatment, and for severe varicose veins during pregnancy.

Stockings can be machine washed (a laundry bag is recommended) in lukewarm water. Do not tumble dry, bleach, dry clean or iron. Simply hang up to dry overnight.

Private Health Fund Extras members may receive a rebate on these stockings.
